For testing and calibration laboratories seeking recognition and credibility
within their field of expertise, accreditation to national and international
laboratory standards criteria ultimately becomes necessary. Preparation for
accreditation involves developing and maintaining a specified quality program
that includes complete quality system documentation, with quality manual and
policy, corrective action and internal audit systems, together with management
review of the quality system. The laboratory must develop and maintain ongoing
proficiency studies through interlaboratory comparisons, use of certified
reference materials, replicate testing and correlation methods. The laboratory
must establish and maintain uncertainty determinations that state the precision
or repeatability for all of the test methods employed.
